Water: What has it done for me lately?

Drinking water is part of survival. It helps flush our bodies of toxins and keeps us hydrated making our skin look clearer and our eyes look brighter. You will notice a huge difference in your face especially around the eyes. The under eye area will be smoother and lessen the appearance of fine lines. You will feel more energized and often ward off headaches. People can get headaches from dehydration so instead of turning to the pain killers, chug some water and it can go away in the same amount of time if not less. It can also help you shed pounds. Often times, people will look to the fridge for food when they are thirsty or drink a dehydrating drink such as coffee or iced tea. Drink more water.

Sugar Tip*** Take your body weight and divide it by half and aim to drink that many ounces in water per day. Example: Total body weight: 140 lbs. Divided by 2 is 70. Aim to drink 70 oz. per day.

What does 70 oz. look like? Drink two liter bottles throughout the day which are just over 33 oz. each.

Always remember to consult your doctor before starting any new regimen to make sure that it is right for you.

Kimberlee's 4th of July Pick: All American Girl!

As the stars and stripes of the American Flags wave proudly in every neighborhood across the country and BBQ grills are at full flare. I feel especially patriotic as the excitement of Independence Day approaches.  What I love about Independence Day is that it is a pure celebration of all things charismatically American.  Hot Rods are coming out to see the light of day, ice cream trucks and lemonade stands are in no shortage, and fashion is suddenly abounding with elements of masculine brawn and curvaceous femininity combined with good old All-American denim.

One of my favorite representations of these fashion elements incorporated into one timeless piece is the Ella Shirt Dress in Light Blue Denim from Alloy. Light as a feather and 100% cotton, this fabric is impressively cool and breathable for the warm summer months. The cut is just loose enough to create an alluring silhouette, and the design screams “I stole this from my boyfriend, and added pumps.”  What on earth could possibly embody femininity more than that?  The light blue denim fabric is perfectly patriotic, and when paired with the Kushin square heeled pump from Spring Shoes in a shade of red that looks like they were kissed by Marilyn Monroe herself…well, watch out for the fireworks!

I added an opera length Swarovski Crystal wrap necklace in All American from Zahava Designs to my decolletage to pay tribute to the 4th of July with truly glamorous style.

Sparkler, burger, and lemonade in hand, Happy Birthday America… I like your style!

Fashionista Tip:
Shirt Dresses are fantastic, but not when the buttons are popping.  Be sure that you are shopping to fit the largest part of your body, and then add a wide or skinny belt if you find it to be too loose in the middle.  Don’t size down, it will not give you the curvaceous and alluring silhouette you are looking for.

Sunday Supper: Whole Roasted Rosemary Chicken, Purple Carrots and Red Potatoes

Welcome to my first edition of Sunday Suppers! As I had mentioned last week, I want to bring back the tradition of home cooked meals and family getting together to share food and stories. Below you will find your shopping list as well as recipe guidelines. You can modify the recipe to your taste or quantity that you are serving. If you have any questions, send me a message on Facebook (Cyn Sugar) or email me at sugarlipslifestyletips@gmail.com. Enjoy!

Cook Time: 2 hours
Approximate price per person: $3.67

Whole roasted chicken is a very easy, no non-sense dish that everyone can enjoy. It's hearty, home cooked and delicious. You can use the leftovers for a second meal during the week as well. I like to make home-made chicken pot pie with cheddar biscuits or chicken salad over mixed greens and vinaigrette. It is also a really affordable dish when feeding a large number of people. It usually works out to be about $3.00 per person.  Let's get started!

Sugar Tip**** When choosing your bird, avoid companies like Tyson that mass produce antibiotic pumped chicken. Ask your local butcher for assistance when choosing.

Rosemary Roasted Chicken, Purple Carrots and Red Potatoes

What You Will Need

1 whole chicken
cayenne pepper
paprika
10 stems of rosemary
1 clove garlic
1 whole lemon plus 1/2 lemon juiced
salt & pepper
olive oil
1 bunch carrots
2-3 red potatoes per person

What To Do

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a small bowl mix a 1/3 cup olive oil, juice from a half of a lemon, 1 minced fresh garlic clove, 1 Tablespoon kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper, 1 T. paprika and cayenne to taste. Rinse the rosemary and remove six sprigs from the stem. Chop up and add to the olive oil mix. Let this stand so the flavors come together. I like to do this hours ahead of cooking to get the maximum effect.

Rinse out your chicken inside and out removing the gizzard pack from the cavity and pat dry. Place the bird on the roasting rack in your roasting pan. Take your olive oil blend and liberally rub on the outside of the chicken. Take the remaining four sprigs of rosemary and stuff inside the cavity of the chicken. Slice your lemon in half and add that too. Bake in the oven for an hour and a half. It will look similar to the picture on the left.

Meanwhile, rinse and prepare your carrots and potatoes. Cut the potatoes into equal sized pieces and remove the tops off of the carrots. Toss the potatoes on olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Place in the bottom of the roasting pan or on a baking sheet and put in the oven with the chicken. Toss the carrots in olive oil and set aside. You will burn the carrots if you add them too early. Put them in to roast for the last 25 minutes just before you take out the chicken.

Once everything is roasted and the chicken is done, remove from the oven, cover with foil and allow the meat to rest for 20 minutes. This is a VERY important step. If you cut the chicken too early, the juice will run everywhere. After twenty minutes, cut and serve. Enjoy!!

Introduction to Sunday Suppers: Seasonal Foods to Seek Out

Welcome to Sunday Suppers on Sugar Lips Lifestyle Tips! Every Sunday, I will provide you with a meal idea, recipe or ingredient tips that you can use that evening to create a healthy home cooked meal for you and your family.

I chose supper vs. dinner because I grew up in the heart of the Midwest where Grandma Deli, as we say, calls dinner supper and her couch a davenport. When we were little, our whole family would gather at Grandma's house after Sunday School and have a home cooked meal and some well needed family time. We would sit quietly during the service with our  growling tummies and patience dwindling as we anticipated seeing our cousins again. We would run out of the car hands waving and mouths yelling as we ran into Grandma's and wrapped our arms around her legs. How she made it to the house before us was always a mystery. With the sounds of children giggling and plates clinking, we would all squeeze around the table with empty stomachs and full hearts.

I want to bring back the tradition of Sunday Suppers with the family where we all get together and catch up on our week while preparing for the next. Sundays are perfect for this tradition because I have a beautiful Farmers Market one block away with fresh local ingredients that could inspire any self-proclaimed cook. My chef and Sommelier agreed to assist with my new project to help me provide you with recipe guidelines and wine pairings as well. Below are a list of seasonal fruits and vegetables to keep your eyes out for. See you next Sunday!
  • Beets
  • Peaches
  • Fava Beans
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Cherries
  • Apricots
  • Broccoli
  • Bell Peppers
  • Eggplant
  • Carrots

Joan Jett in Ballet Slippers: Kimberlee's Pick of The Week

Have you ever seen a pair of shoes that literally made you bounce up and down while squealing out loud with pure energy and excitement? If so, you and I can relate. If not, someday this may happen to you, and the only advice I have  to offer you is to succumb to your inner instinct, buy them. There is truly no other way to get them out of your head.

I am definitely a self admitted shoe girl, and have experienced this on numerous occasions. Shoes just have a way of making me experience pure emotion at first sight, they look colorfully inviting when I open my closet each morning, and they stay faithfully flattering no matter what changes life may bring. I recently had one of these ethereal bouncy energetic squealing experiences of mine (in the privacy of my own home; thanks to the internet) when I discovered the Kit Mesh Pump, by Harajuku Lovers.

The style is bold and unique keeping in line with the sandal/peep toe bootie hybrid trend with its mesh like body and fantastic silver buckles. I loooooove buckles. They stand about a mile high, on the stiletto heel and turn heads as you walk with their totally girlie PINK bottoms. And here comes the absolute best part about this pair of foot candy…because Harajuku Lovers knows how to contour the arch of a woman’s foot, they are maybe the most comfortable shoes I have ever had the pleasure to walk in. Who knew?

While wearing these head turners, turn on your confident smile and prepare for compliments…I have yet to leave the house in them and not be stopped by someone to tell me how much they just love my shoes and must know where to find them. The pale pink bottom next to the hard black leather immediately makes me think of one of my favorite trends for 2010, the Joan Jett in ballet slippers kind of leather & lace combination that add a hard edge to the violently feminine.

To add a bit of additional femininity, I paired them with a sweet little black lace covered dress, but they would also work fantastically with a feminine top in a luxuriously floaty fabric paired with a black skinny leg pant, which draws the eye straight downward to the detail of the shoe for maximum effect with minimal effort.

Shopping Tip: I was fortunate enough to find that my size was available at Smart Bargains.com, for under $30. Sizes are limited, but it is most definitely worth saving $50 to check there first. If they do not carry your size, the Kit Mesh Pump is also available at Endless.com.

Ouch! Razor Burn: Tips on Prevention and Techniques

After 20 years of shaving, I am finally learning how. Recently I have been really conscious of the back of my ankles and calves. They are really sensitive to shaving and are always irritated with small red marks around where the hair grows in. My technique and preparation have not been successful and it was causing me to loose confidence with summer around the corner. I came across a tip from InStyle Magazine's Beauty Director, Amy Synnot-D'Annibale who says that using conditioner instead of shaving cream is less drying to the skin. (1) It made me rethink razor burn; you CAN prevent it!

What Is Razor Burn Anyway?
We all know what it looks like but how is it defined? According to the Wise Geek, "Razor burn is a skin condition caused by shaving too closely, incorrectly, or sometimes merely by shaving in sensitive areas, especially when people have easily irritated skin. It can look like a small red rash, feature bumps, or even cause infected pimples or blisters. Razor burn can itch severely, making the skin very uncomfortable for several days. More mild cases can result in a couple of hours of discomfort and reddish skin". (2)

How Do I Prevent Getting Razor Burn?
Every time we shave we are not only cutting the hair but removing skin and moisture. By properly preparing your skin for the shave, you can reduce the irritation to the skin. According to the How To Get Rid Of Stuff Website, it's all about preparation and technique.
  • They say to prepare the skin by exfoliating first with a clean loofa or a chemical exfoliant with salicylic acid to remove any dirt, oil and dead skin cells.
  • Add conditioner or lotion to the legs or underarms and allow to sit for a few minutes to soften hair. Note***If you leave it on more than a few minutes it will make the skin puff up preventing you from getting a close shave.
  • They also recommended using old-fashioned shaving soap with a badger brush instead of shaving gel or cream. The brush helps lift the hair and the soap provides better lubrication. (3)
 Technique Tips
  • Use warm water to soften the hair
  • Use a sharp blade and don't reuse the razor more than a few times for optimum results
  • Make sure that the blade is clean
  • Try not to re-shave the same area. If you do, reapply your conditioner, shave gel or soap beforehand.
  • Do not stretch skin

Shopping Tips For Wedding Season: LBD on a Budget!

Thanks to Laura, who reminded me of a great little gem that I found, your summer wedding season will be a breeze! Seeing that we are in a serious economic crisis, budgets are tighter and value has taken on a whole new meaning to the consumer. I, however, always seem to have a budget crisis of some sort and it forces me to find fashion staples at a very affordable price. Now there are some who will turn up their nose at me for Choosing Target clothing because they find it beneath them but so be it. There are numerous designers that signed with the account this year so there are plenty of designer options available.

I had a wedding of great importance to me and my family and needed a classic look. I wanted to choose something that was timeless, elegant and comfortable. It also had to be easy to care for and not require dry cleaning. I found this LBD at Target for $39.99. It has a belted waist creating shape and pleats that flatter any form.  I posted the picture from a wedding that I attended for you to see it on me but there is a better picture below for the detail of the piece. You can click on the links below for more details of each item. I paired it with patent black peep toe pumps for $26.99, a long strand of Tiffany Pearls and matching earrings with a classic B&M watch. I wore my hair up in a simple twist which proved to be the best choice in the 105 degree heat that day! Simple accessories that were as classic as the dress.

Insider Tips: If you choose a budget friendly outfit, pair with classic jewelry such as diamonds or pearls. I wouldn't advise on pairing budget with costume jewelry. If it is not done right, the whole look can appear really cheap. If done correctly, nobody will be the wiser.

Secondly, if you choose a cheap shoe, make sure that it doesn't look cheap. A patent is a patent, is a patent, right? They are all the same no matter who designs them. It's a sure bet. Faux leather is not a sure bet and always looks cheap. If you want a leather look that isn't patent, seek out a sale shoe that has an all leather upper.

New Age Spot Photos: Week 3 of 12 is Complete!

I have completed my third week of the 12 week trial with Clinique's even better clinical and the results are in. I can see a difference in the darkness in the patches near my eyes and am wearing less make-up as a result. I have also had a few friends comment on them as well. In a good way of course! I don't feel that the spots directly below my eyes have lightened as much and was really upset when I saw them in a recent photo through my make-up!

Now, there are a few disclaimers that I need to share because this will affect the outcome. First, the lighting in the photos is slightly different due to the time of day that these photos were taken. I tried to get the angle to match but that's tough when you are taking photos of yourself on your iPhone. I also haven't been doing a great job of being consistent with my sunscreen applications. In addition, I had a long pool day in the sun right before theses photos were taken. There is an upside to these disclaimers and that is they are realistic. The results would be far greater if I stayed out of the sun and wore sunscreen all of the time but the reality of it is that I haven't and love going to the pool. Judge accordingly.

I have the photos side-by-side so that you can see the actual results, if any,  better. You be the judge. I would love to hear from you!

Hot Shoe Trends: Sandals, Wedges, Embelishments and Wearable Heel Heights

I L.O.V.E. this shoe. Isn't this shoe smokin' hot? This season, wedges are everywhere and making a serious statement. Embellishments, cork and wood work as well. Color, Color, Color! Express yourself!

What's the latest shoe trend? "Confidence in Comfort" - Colleen Bradish, Senior Line Builder, Aldo Shoes

Out is the metallic and heavily studded shoe. I have seen a few shoes this season, such as the one above, with a little studding but nothing like we had seen before. There's a small trickle of bigger studded gladiators left but this trend has passed. You will see many of them on sale so be on the look out and consider over all wear in comparison to the price.

This is a fun season for sandals, wedges, and shoes with ankle treatments. There are numerous versions and styles to express your individuality while remaining functional.

I am seeing  a large number of wedges in all styles including cork like the one above on the left and wood work and buckles like the shoe above on the right.

Last season, we saw sky high platforms or flat gladiators and not much in between. This season, there is a push towards wearable heel heights that can be worn for longer than a few hours without cramping your style; these styles can be worn day to night and trekking through the city.

You will also see sandals with ankle embellishments such as these cute little things on the left and right. The embellishments are another style point to any outfit and add a touch of carefree femininity to your look.

Insider Tip: Choose a shoe that has a cut underneath the ankle. This is the most versatile style that will flatter almost any body type and any ankle.

Here is an example of a shoe that is over the ankle:

Kimberlee's Accessories of The Week: Glamorous Persian Pickles

What does a Persian Pickle have to do with fashion accessories? I can't wait for you to find out! It's all about the glamorous drape of a scarf or the curve hugging grip of a unique belt that can polish up a t-shirt and jeans taking them from casual Friday to everyday fashionista with the bat of an eyelash. Here are two of my latest finds!

There is something truly magical about an accessory that is both easy to wear, and universally flattering. As luck would have it, these on-trend little treasures can be found at almost every turn, in a variety of sumptuous materials, and desirable colors and patterns. I myself, however, prefer to take my treasure hunting to unfamiliar places in search of the uniquely affordable.

This week I found myself searching for my lost shaker of salt in Margaritaville (no luck with that), I unearthed a colorfully playful scarf by the greatest name I have ever heard: Persian Pickles, for  only $18.   The neutral oatmeal background is covered in a garden of paisley and flowers in a fantastically rich pallet of deep olive, golden yellow, and whisper of coral and pink.  This piece will add an element of glam to the easy laid back looks of summer, but in 100% cotton, will stay easy and breezy.

As an added souvenir from my expedition, I came across a fierce little treasure, the Tanzania Belt. The strikingly deep coral tone of the tiny beads that are woven together in a 2.5” wide band initially caught my attention, and when I saw the fantastically stained wooden element linking it all together, I was sold. The design, perfect. The fit of the elastic infrastructure beneath the beading, like a glove. The $18 price tag, breathtaking! Coral being such a magnificent accent color, this lovely waist creator can be paired easily with blues, greens, yellows, and neutrals. Use with caution when approaching hues in the red or orange families.

Fair Trade: What Does It Mean?

I never understood what Fair Trade meant. I assume that it means something good but what does Fair Trade really mean? How can I trust that it's really 'fair"? If it is more expensive, is it worth the extra money? How do I know that you aren't just ripping me off and calling it "fair"?

I started with the article of inspiration for the post from Martha Stewart Living. According to Martha Stewart, our trusted adviser of all things earthly, Fair Trade simply means that "farmers who grew the food received a fair price for it". (1) Seems simple right? Well, I guess that I would feel good about that if I knew that the farmers were from the U.S. making a comparable wage and had comparable living conditions but chances are they are from third world countries and are selling coffee beans or bananas to support their entire family. So needless to say, I wasn't completely satisfied with that answer.

I consulted a trusted source, The Good Human.  I have referenced him a few times in other posts regarding toxic chemicals and organic fruits etc. He had a really interesting article that helped narrow it down. He said that fair trade is much more than a fair price as it "promotes standards for fair labor standards, environmentalism, social policy, fair pricing, and community development". (2) If you are interested, click on the link above to read his article about Fair Trade and certification standards etc.

Conclusion: Buying fair trade promotes the community in which these farmers live stimulating their economy and ensuring better environmental practices. Now that seems like a good idea to me!

Free iPhone App: What's On My Food?

I found a great iPhone application that is very helpful and accessible. As you may remember, I wrote about the "Dirty Dozen" fruits and vegetables back in February. These have higher levels of pesticides in them and should be swapped out for organic when available. I have included a list of the them below for your reference. Here is another great article with additional information from The Good Human.

Why is this important and how does this apply to you?
  • Breast Cancer: Learn which pesticides that have been linked to this and other cancers.
  • Reproductive Health: If you plan on having a family, become aware of known pesticides that are hormone disruptors that can alter your dream.
  • Brain Development in Children: Learn which toxins are linked to ADD and other neurological problems in children.

It's called What's On My Food. You can go to their website to find out what's on your food and read more information on pesticides. It's great to have and is free. You can access it in seconds while you are shopping protecting yourself and your family from harm.

They get their information from the USDA Pesticide Data Program and break it down into four categories and percentages of each:
       1) Known or Probable Carcinogens
       2) Hormone Disruptors
       3) Neurotoxins
       4) Developmental or reproductive toxicants

The Dirty Dozen
  • Peaches
  • Strawberries
  • Cherries
  • Pears
  • Grapes (Imported)
  • Spinach
  • Lettuce
  • Potatoes
  • Apples
  • Sweet Bell Peppers
  • Celery

2010 Summer Hairstyles: Trends To Try

Head into summer with an extremely sexy hair style. This season is all about updo's and side swept looks that are playful and fun. Soft curls and relaxed faux bobs are romantic and taking center stage. These appear to be created with ease and are just messy enough to soften any look. It may take you some time the first go 'round so plan a a few extra minutes in the morning or play with the look the night before. Check out these pictures I found on Elle.com for 2010 Best Summer Updos.

Front Split
The front split with longer bangs was all over Fashion Week. Soft tresses with lightly pulled back ponytails or buns as seen in the photographs of Olivia Palermo on right and Alexa Chung on left. These looks are great for casual or fancy affairs alike.

Buns Hun
I like big buns, little buns, side buns, slick buns, high buns and even the "Mega" bun. The irony of the "mega" bun is that it was on J-Lo's head. I wanted to change it to big bun and then paused...no one would know which bun I was referring to, her head or her famous behind. The high bun on Kate Bosworth is a classic, elegant look and perfect for numerous events. Although she does not have any accessories on in this photo, I would suggest that you wear a statement necklace OR a pair of statement earrings to really set off the look.

To The Left...It's All About The Side
Everything is side swept and sassy! Side braid, side hair knot, side pinned roll and side ponytails.

How To Create a Side Swept Look
You will need bobby pins and hair ties. I like the look of a side swept bang opposite of the side knot to create balance.
  • Tease hair at the crown to create lift. Smooth over with a bristle brush or keep a small section of hair that hasn't been teased to lay over the top.
  • Pull hair to one side of your head and put hair into a ponytail.
  • Take the end of the ponytail and twist. Loosely wrap the twisted ponytail around the hair tie similar to a bun.
  • Bobby pin the end underneath the base of your ponytail concealing your clip.
  • Gently pull on the wrapped hair to create a long twisted knot.
  • Clip any fly-away hairs with additional bobby pins.

Kimberlee's Pick of The Week: Carrie Fever

With the smell of Sex And The City 2 in the air, I can’t help but be swept away with the highly contagious Carrie fever…and a little touch of Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte.
I would personally sacrifice almost anything to abandon the world for only a few hours and move straight into Carrie’s closet just to gain mere inspiration.
Stricken, I found myself on a mission this week; find a fabulous addition to my wardrobe that would meet the following criteria:
A.  Be fiercely unique and bold, like Carrie
B.  Carry a graceful femininity, like Charlotte
C.  Command respect as a powerful female presence, like Miranda
D. Scream out Dead Sexy from the hanger, like Samantha
Add to that list that it must be a complete joy to wear, look fabulous, and at about a tenth of the cost of the heavenly fashions the girls are draped in on the big screen.
What I found, was nothing short of perfection with a $38 price tag.
The Pretty Ruffle Dress at Francesca’s is a brilliant combination of a unique one shoulder wide strap that swoops up across the chest and angles down across the back, a gracefully feminine petal detail in a soft peachy pink with raw edge accents, a dead sexy cut and brilliantly flattering drape, and an overall attention commanding presence.  A soft jersey, the material makes this dress perfectly breathable for the warmer weather and allows the material to gracefully float with the curves of your body.  I feel like I should be at brunch with the girls in this dress, absolute must-have!  Mission accomplished.
***This dress is available in stores only.
For jewelry, I felt that the detail at the neck should take center stage, so I would add a minimal amount of sparkle to my look and went with my current favorites, a pair of 3” chains with glimmery rock star black stones for my ears that I snagged from Zahava Designs for only $25.

Cheers!
Kimberlee

A One Week Comparison of My Age Spots

Week Two Report: Cyn's Age Spots

Here is a look at my week one photo below and my week two photo on the right. The lighting was slightly different when I took these photos but I think I can see a slight difference in color. The patches around my eyes have become noticeably lighter and I am feeling more confident already. Only 11 more weeks to go until the final results are in. Keep checking back for weekly updates and photos.
