Tips to Accessorize: Earrings and Handbags

Everyone has their go-to accessories. But are these accessories an after thought, are they purely convenience or are they well coordinated and strategically chosen? Here are some accessory tips you can use to help choose a handbag or earrings.

Choose an accessory that accentuates the colors in your outfit. Pull from the hues in the material to really bring out that color. For example, if you have a navy blue pinstripe suit with tiny teal stripes, choose a bright teal handbag to pull out the color.

Dress for the occasion. Sometimes we get lazy and use the same bag for every outfit but that doesn't always work for the occasion. If you are headed to a formal affair, choose a cocktail clutch. If you are going to the zoo with the kids, carry an over the shoulder tote for accessibility and  extra room.

When traveling, coordinate a handbag that will go with most of your outfits if not all to reduce on the bulk in your carry on.

 Costume
 Dangle
Sparkler

Note the above photos. Choose earrings that will go with your hairstyle that day. If you have your hair up in a loose bun, choose a romantic dangled earring. If you have your hair down, choose and earring that will shimmer through your hair.  If you have your hair back in a ponytail, choose a classic diamond stud or a costume pair that match the colors in your outfit.

Bat Those Eyelashes Girls: The Low Down on Eyelash Extensions

I have always dreamed of having thick, beautiful, dark, volumous lashes. Much of that is the influence of marketing I am sure but I still want what I want and that means beautiful bat your eyes like you are Aubrey Hepburn bold, black, thick lashes. How does one get such lashes?

This April I celebrated my birthday in Las Vegas with some friends and what is more natural than eyelash extensions in LV? Nothing. I made a mistake of buying fake eyelashes and applying them myself with cheap glue. Two problems occurred. One, the application was slightly uneven. Which to the naked eye, you could not tell because I covered it with a thick layer of black eye liner. The second problem was not as obvious or immediate. Over the following three days, the glue had caused my long lashes to break off and I was left with little nubby lashes. Yikes!

I love the look of full lashes but am now afraid to apply them in fear that I will break off my natural lashes. The same thing happened when I had an all natural eyelash tint. I now live in fear of lash breakage! But I found a solution: Semi-permanent eyelash extensions.

A store bought pack of lashes will run you $3-$7 a pair and can be worn once usually for no more than 8-10 hours at a time. Removal is tricky and can cause damage if not removed properly. Eyelash extensions are anywhere from $45-$250 per application and are costly to maintain. ***But please keep in mind, The cheap eyelashes that I applied to my eyes that caused all of my lashes to break off, were inexpensive BUT I didn't have eyelashes left. It took 2 months to get them growing and almost 4 months of growth to get back to where they were before the application. Was it worth it? No.

So I got in touch with our friends at Cosmo Spa Lounge in Oakland to find out just how these work and according to Soo-Jin, a specialist at Cosmo Spa Lounge, eyelash extensions will last up to 2 months. Unlike traditional eyelash glue for the skin near the lash line, the lavish glue is actually placed on the lash. As your eyelashes grow out, every 60-120 days, the extensions will grow out with them. You will need to have them filled every 2-4 weeks and of course I recommend having them removed professionally.  You can swim, shower and live your life as you normally would without having to worry and looking absolutely FAB-U-LOUS.

Just like that, my eyelash dilemma is solved. If you would like more information on these services, please email me at sugarlipslifestyletips@gmail.com or contact Soo-Jin at info@cosmospalounge.com

The Secret to Crystal Clear Windows: Green Clean

For those of you who know me, I am NO Martha Stewart. I get by and try to be creative but when it comes to tricks of the trade, I still have quite a bit of learning to do. Today, I received the tip.

I live in a second floor rental unit and like most rentals, the maintenance is taken care of by the Landlord. My Landlord happens to be the most attentive Landlord one could have and always willing to help out. I also don't like to bother her because of it and I often try to do as many things as I can on my own but today I needed help removing my windows to clean them.

Many of you are homeowners so you understand the pain cleaning the windows can be especially on the second floor. And most of you may already know this little secret but I still think it's worth sharing.  I learned a little trick that will go along way and doesn't require much.

All you need is really hot water, a sponge and a squeegee. That's the secret. I have been Windexing away and leaving small streaks behind for years and now I too know the secret to crystal clear windows. The extra hot water dissolves the dirt and with two swipes of water, you are ready to squeegee. Profound. I think I can see the Atlantic from my window.

Sunday Supper: Two Bean Vegetable Stir Fry

I have been making an attempt to eat a few "no meat" dishes throughout the week. I have a few vegetarians and pescaterians in my life so I try to be sensitive to main dishes that are hearty, flavorful and calorie conscious.

Today's dish is just that. It has fresh seasonal veggies with sautéed garbanzos.

What you need
Garlic
Sea Salt & freshly cracked pepper
Olive oil
Red onion
Freshly cut green beans
Tomatoes (I used small cherry)
Mushrooms
Yellow squash
Zucchini
Garbanzo beans

What to do
Sauté red onion in 1T. Olive oil over medium to medium high heat until fragrant. Add garbanzo beans and brown. Stir often enough to prevent the onion from burning.

Add sliced mushrooms. Meanwhile, Blanch the green beans for 1 minute. Strain and add to the pan. Stir. Add zucchini, squash and tomatoes. Mince garlic and add to the pan and stir to incorporate. Cover pan and let cook for 4-5 minutes. You should have enough moisture from your vegetables to prevent it from burning. Salt & pepper to taste and serve immediately.

Saturday and Sunday's post

Sorry for the delay... I was on weekend getaway and off the grid without Internet access. Check out the two posts on the other page:

Fashion Friday with Kimberlee! Pick of the Week: Effortless Style

Not only is it her birthday today, it's the day she decided to post a hilarious last liner. Get on Facebook and wish this little Fashionista a uber Happy Birthday (Cyn Sugar or the Fan Page- www.sugarlipslifestyletips.com) Read this and enjoy!! -Cyn

Luxurious layers that drape, cascade, and evoke nostalgic tranquility while conjuring images of apple picking and endless flurries of colorful leaves drifting to the ground.  Fall is in full swing, bringing along with it the indulgently rich fabrics and warm textures perfectly constructed to complement the cooler temperatures.

Hot on everyone’s list this season are chunky knit sweaters, capes or cardigans for layering, and skinny pants with unique detail such as playful cargo pockets or the touch-ably soft texture of corduroy.  Truly wearable everyday pieces that don a super stylish air, I adore the idea of this (seemingly) effortless style.  However, as is true of most every fabulous look of our time, without applying the required amount of effort to choose the most perfect pieces, great style just will not exist.
Chunky knit sweaters can be tricky as too much bulk applied in just the wrong place can leave one resembling a large potato sack.  Try instead a chunky knit cape, or cardigan, or the hybrid “cape-igan” with an asymmetric hem and an open front that cascades loosely down the hip, layered over a fitted blouse or t-shirt.  My pick this week comes from Victoria’s Secret, well known for adding the sexy factor to their designs, the Wool-blend Cableknit Open Cardigan Sweater  available in a variety of shades from a true autumn palette and for as much play time as this sweater will get over the coming months, it is an absolute steal for only $49.

As cute as cargo pockets on a skinny pant can be, they can also destroy the long and lean line of the leg, and finding just the right amount of “skinny” can be quite a daunting task all unto itself (too skinny = REALLY bad for the thighs, too loose = REALLY bad for the tooshie).  Try a pair of skinny corduroy’s instead, with just a hint of stretch, the corduroy will be just weighted enough to support and complement your every curve without feeling too heavy.  My second pick this week, are the comfortably sexy curve hugging VS Pencil Pant in Stretch Corduroy from Victoria’s Secret,
in black or a dark shade of brown to accentuate the “skinny” and pair with a sky high stiletto or a military inspired boot with lots of shiny buckles.  I love buckles.

Effortless?  Well, not really.  But if you saw me in the apple orchard surrounded by colorful autumn leaves, you’d probably think so.

New Clinique Product: Repairwear Laser Focus Wrinkle & UV Damage Corrector

Clinique has introduced a new product that may help with my spots. Many of you know that I completed a 12 week study of their even better clinical product to reduce the dark marks near my eyes. I was leaving Starbucks and caught a glimpse of Sephora's store front with the new Repairwear Laser Focus Wrinkle and UV Damage Corrector.

So of course I went inside to consult. The rep said that they are seeing more and more UV damage around the eyes due to the sunglasses with big lenses. They are actually magnifying the sun in this sensitive area. This product is designed to correct the UV damage and wrinkles all over the face. I asked if it would be beneficial to double up and she advised not to; the repairwear laser focus should be enough.

We are catching the tail end of summer and beginning mid October, I will start this trial. I will keep you posted. Also, if any of you have these spots, please email me photos and feel free to start with me!

Inspiring The Leader Within: Recommended Reading

Recently I learned that a friend's career path has been interrupted due to lack of effective leadership by his mentors.  News of a discontinued relationship with any company of pride is always trying and emotional. The conversation was grim but the outcome was positive as he realized that this is not a failure but an opportunity to grow as a leader. As I listened to him share, a particular mentor and role model came to mind who's leadership has guided me time and time again. I did my best to share insight and offer advice.
Some of us are born to lead while others are taught. We can be instructed to do so but not necessarily taught how to. I hope that today's recommended readings will help you on your journey to becoming the leader within.

  • Crucial Conversations: Tools For Talking When Stakes Are High by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillian, and Al Switzler
  • The 7 Habit's of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change by Stephen Covey
  • Sun Tzu and The Art of Business: Six Strategic Principles For Managers by Mark R. McNeilly

  • It's Not My Department! How America Can Return To Excellence-Giving and Receiving Quality Service by Peter Glen
  • The Spirit To Serve Marriott's Way by J.W. Marriott, Kathi Ann Brown, and Jim Collins
  • The New Gold Standard: 5 Leadership Principles For Creating Legendary Customer Experience Courtesy of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company by Joseph Michelli

Each company has training programs to fit the mold of what they feel is a good representation of the corporation. Fortunately, I have had a very successful mentor teach me leadership skills that I will carry throughout my professional career. I challenge you to go beyond what is mandatory and become the leader that you are.

Kimberlee's Pick of the Week: Over The Knee Boots

I will not willingly confess to the exact number of style and fashion publications that I currently subscribe to (more than a dozen, less than a million), but when there appears to be a commonality in each and every one of their "Top 10" lists of "must have" style trends for the new season one must take notice.

Not for the faint of heart, the “notice me” over the knee boot trend is definitely a true style commitment, and requires serious confidence for maximum effect.  At 5’2” I myself am rarely caught in anything less than the cloud kissing height of a stiletto heel, however, the image that comes to mind when combining an ultra high heel with an over the knee boot creates a loudly screaming statement shoe which would be less than practical for a girl to get away with in the average day to day 9 to 5 environment, and could only be worn socially a handful of times before it would lose it’s charm.  Drat.  That will not do.

Still…I really, really, REALLY want a pair.  What to do, what to do?    There must be a happy medium.  I reason, rationalize, sleep on it a bit, and then with an ethereal rush of wisdom, the pearly gates of shoe heaven open before me and produce:  The Over-The-Knee Mini Wedge Boot by Skechers

I discovered this reasonably priced $99 boot while casually perusing through Victoria’s Secret’s new fall footwear collection, and was instantly in shoe love with its sleek black shine of the “leatherette” shaft kissed by a 1 ¾” wedge heel complete with a rubber tread bottom.  Oh, and as I may have mentioned before, I love love love buckles.

This boot feels like I am wearing a pair of notoriously comfortable Skechers tennis shoes.  Shoe magic.  The shaft of the boot hits a good 3” above my knee, and the sleek simplicity of the design carries only a strap and buckle on the back of the unique U cut at the top of the calf making them so completely versatile that I can pair them with just about anything in my fall wardrobe.

In the short time I have owned these heart stopping show pieces, I have worn them to a fashion event with a smokin’ hot faux leather moto jacket from Forever 21 (under $35…and worth EVERY penny) for a rocked out head to toe black “leather” look, to work with my Gap sweater dress, and to a birthday party with jeggings and a long sleeve t-shirt.

On trend?  Check.  Sleek black leatherette for under $100 looking anything but cheap?  Check.  Versatile, wearable, and smokin’ hot?  Check, check, check.

Sunday Supper: B's Famous Osso Bucco and Creamy Basil Polenta (video clips)

This dish is absolutely amazing! If you want a dish that will make you famous, try this one. Please be advised that this is a very advanced dish requiring a feel for the kitchen and familiarity with the processes. It is a time commitment to make this as it will take a minimum of four hours. It is recommended to cook longer to maximize the tenderness. B makes this dish all day while watching football. This dish on the left, was prepared in six and a half hours and the prep took about an hour. But ooh la la, it is worth the time and energy!

What you will need:
2 whole big Carrots
2 celery stalks
1 yellow onion
olive oil
7 garlic cloves
2 cans diced San Marzano tomatoes
1 bottle dry Italian red wine such as chianti (reserve
2 cartons of organic beef stock (recommended Pacific Natural Foods)
2 bay leaves
2 T. tomato paste
Salt & Pepper
dried oregano
Parmesan
heavy whipping cream or half & half (you can substitute low fat milk here)
polenta
butter
basil
4 veal shanks / osso bucco ***Sugar Lips Tip: When buying the shanks, they could be labeled as either veal shanks or osso bucco***
Flour

What to do:
Prepare the meat by mixing 1/2 cup flour, salt & pepper in a bowl and dredging the veal shanks through it to lightly coat. Heat 3 T. olive oil in a dutch oven on medium high heat. Once, the oil comes to temp, sear the shanks on all sides. Remove the shanks from the dutch oven (DO) and set aside. Add diced carrots, celery and 1/2 diced yellow onion to the DO. Saute on medium high until all are brown and caramelized. Crush two cloves of garlic and give it a rough chop. Add to the mix and stir for a minute to smell the fragrance of the aromatics. Add the two Tb. tomato paste and incorporate. Next, you will add one can of the San Marzano tomatoes and turn the heat up to high. You will want to reduce until all of the liquid out of the mixture.

Once you have reduced the mixture, add 3/4th of the bottle of wine and reduce again until the braising liquid is approximately a quarter of the amount that you started with. For example, if you have approximately 4 cups of liquid in the DO, reduce it to 1 cup. Add two cartons of beef stock, 7-10 roughly chopped basil leaves, 2 bay leaves to the pot and reduce to half. Pre-heat your oven to 275. If you have time, B recommends covering the pot, reduce the heat to a simmer to let the flavors coalesce for about an hour. If you don't have time, add the veal shanks, cover and stick the DO in the oven. Let this the shanks braise for a minimum of three hours rotating the veal throughout the process. Please note***your shanks will want to float because of the higher fat content so it is important that you make sure that they are submerged throughout the process.

While your shanks are in the oven, begin your marinara sauce by dicing the other 1/2 of your onion. Heat 2 T. olive oil in a large sauce pan over medium high heat. Add the onions to the pan and saute for 7 minutes. Add 5 diced garlic cloves and cook for one minute stirring constantly to avoid burning your garlic. Burned garlic becomes bitter and will ruin the flavor. Add the second can of San Marzanos to the pan and cook on high heat for 20 minutes. Add the remaining 1/4 bottle of wine to the sauce along with 1 T. dried oregano. Stir, reduce heat to medium high and cook for 30 minutes or so. Cook until the sauce is condensed and thick. Remove sauce from the stove top and liquefy in a food processor or blender and return to pan. Simmer over low heat. Salt and pepper to taste.

To make your polenta, add 2 cups of braising liquid or chicken stock to a large sauce pan. Add 2 cups of cream, 2 cups of water, 1/2 stick of butter and 7-10 roughly chopped basil leaves. Bring to a boil and whisk in two cups of polenta making sure to whisk constantly and reduce heat to low. Grate fresh Parmesan into the polenta, stir, cover and cook for 30 minutes.

Pull the shanks from the oven and plate as seen in the photo. cover shanks with marinara. Shave parm over the top and serve. YUM!

SFFAMA Fashion Mash-Up Speaking Engagement RECAP

I am continually impressed by SF and it's community. I met some very impressive individuals Thursday night with vision, drive, and determination to make a difference. The event went from 6-9 but the actual discussion started at 7. I felt well prepared but as always, thoughts of wonder flooded my mind as my MK platforms tapped the pavement. Was I over dressed? Who would be there? Will I know more or less than the other panelists? Who will show up to see this? With my mind racing as fast as my feet, I headed down Spear Street towards Pigment Cosmetics to meet the rest of the panelist for the evening.

I was one of eight guests that shared their experiences and time with the members of SFFAMA. The topic of discussion was the impact that technology and social media have had on the fashion industry.  I was equally as impressed with members of the audience; they were memorable and forward thinking. I hope to see them again as well.

An Overview of the Panelists

Jonathan Plozker of Heliotrope: Heliptrope is a natural, locally sourced skin care company right here in Noe Valley. You all know how I value local products and natural goods. This was a find! They offer massage therapists discounts and custom create scents with essential oils.
Sabin Speiser of Speiser Consulting: Sabin was by far the most versed in "tech speak". He is a wealth of knowledge and offered great advice.
Liz Caruana of Liz Caruana Photography: What an amazing page! If you haven't seen her work, please check out her page. She is a fantastic fashion photographer and involved in many of the city's events.
Mai Wong of See Zenn: Mai and her team have an online store with plenty of cute clothes for all of my fashionistas out there. They offer free shipping over $30 and are having a launch party November 6th. For more info, email Mai at marketing@seezenn.com
Dawn Flanigan of Eco-Friendly Fashion Association of California: Dawn is the Founder of this amazing organization and is one of the driving forces behind the green movement in fashion. Check her out at the Green Festival November 5th and 6th.
Irina D'Amato: A Fashion Designer producing hand made fabrics in Europe and importing them in to the US.
Naz Saeed of Eco-chic Zansus Purses: Naz is one of two designers. They "upcycle" by creating purses out of materials that would other wise be discarded.

Pages and People of Note: There were three people in the audience that I wish I had more time to share with them. They are clever, creative, conscious and very fashion forward. Check out these links below:
  1. liveheartfelt.com: Fabulous blog on fashion for Men and Women.
  2. www.HypeBeast.com: Great website with great blogs and resources especially for Men's fashion.
  3. Sexfiction Show on Oct. 6th at 111 Mina FREE
  4. www.sfveganfashionshow.com Guess who learned about vegan fashion? This girl. I can't wait to learn more and am hoping to attend their upcoming fashion show at Golden Gate Park in the County Fair Building Oct. 2nd. Entry fee is $7 and the fashion show is free. Here is more info:
    • San Francisco Vegan Fashion Show, happening October 2nd, is the city’s first vegan fashion exhibition, presented by Karine Brighten Events. The event is free, with $7 admission to the World Vegetarian Festival, and will feature nationally recognized designers Pansy Maiden, Reco Jeans, Lion’s Share Industries, Vaute Coture, Melie Bianco, Cri de Coeur and contributor Mission Savvy. Rory Freedman, co-author of the best selling Skinny Bitch book series, will emcee the event. In addition to the runway presentation, Vaute Couture, Pansy Maiden, and Lion's Share Industries will participate in a Fashion Show Village, where attendees can purchase their products; there will also be a silent auction, managed by Karine Brighten.
Thank you to everyone that called and sent me messages before the event yesterday. It is always nice to hear your voices with words of encouragement and support. To Nancy, Jessica and Mama Badger, thank you SO much for coming out and being there to participate in the discussion.

More to come... tonight!

I had the most amazing time last night. I was unbelievably shy. Yes, y'all....I was shy. I met the most amazing people and am baffled by the amount of talent that in this beautiful city. It has been along time since people have wanted to know my name and what it is that I do (Jeff, Jenny, remember the days of Posh? Multiply that by two). It felt really good. I will post my story tonight.

Brand Management: Tips On Making Yourself Marketable

My sister recently graduated and is looking to make her move into a new career. We had a two hour conversation today about how to not only make her marketable but memorable. It's yesterday's news that our graduates are facing a grim job market. With unemployment rates soaring and employers drowning in a sea of resumes and applicants, how does one stand out?

These are some simple, creative and easy ways to enhance your personal brand and give you the edge you need to land the job.

  • Get connected: With all of the social media channels, it is imperative that you become familiar with them and participate in them. Linked In is a great networking resource that can help you find a job, post a job, get a reference and get connected with other professionals. It's an online platform to post your resume, references, and meet new networks.
  • Make positive of the negatives: Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses and find a way to connect them by turning the negatives into positives. How does the weakness support the strength? If you can't find a connection that is logical, determine a strategy for improvement and have it ready if you are given the opportunity to share.
  • Participate in additional or specified training: Is there a certification program that fits your career? Are their certificate classes that you could take for a few weeks or online that would add to your training and resume? Many universities offer certificate programing all year long and you don't have to be enrolled as a student to participate. You can apply as a special student to take a certification course.
  • Find your niche: What is it that you specialize in? Maybe you think that you don't specialize in anything in particular but you probably know more about something than the next guy making you the more qualified candidate. Rework your resume to reflect your niche or specialty.
Good Luck WS!!

Overcoming Make-Up Obstacles: Application Tips and Choosing What is Right For You

Everyone can benefit from make-up. It can brighten your skin, open your eyes and give you a polished look. Make-up doesn't have to be a mystery. With a few simple guidelines, you can get the look that's right for you. How do I choose the right products? How can I determine what colors are right for me? How is it applied properly? Overcoming theses obstacles can be simple with these simple tips and I even found a great video from Carmindy, of TLC's What Not To Wear show, with application tips for you as well. Enjoy!

Sugar Lips Beauty Tips

Great Make-Up Starts With Great Skin:
Maintaining your skin is the number one priority when trying to get the perfect look with your make-up. Find a regimen that works for you and be consistent with it to create the perfect canvas. Make sure to exfoliate once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells that can dull the skin's appearance. Don't forget to drink plenty of water and take your vitamins!

Prep With A Primer: Primer is used to even out the skin before applying your foundation. Many of these products have antioxidants and other great ingredients that help benefit your skin as well. Apply a small amount all over your face to smooth and fill in fine lines. You will notice a differnce in the way your foundation goes on. Click here to read more on Primer.

Less Is More: As we age, our skin becomes drier and fine lines and wrinkles are more apparent.  Applying make-up can accentuate these lines and make us look older. Powder tends to settle in the creases so use it sparingly or switch to a cream or liquid foundation. Remember, you want to create a hydrated look not a dried out look.

Set your Make-Up: To complete your look, use a translucent powder to set your make-up but try to limit it only on the T-Zone to keep your cheeks looking dewy and beautiful.

Choosing the Foundation Shade That's Right For You: Finding a shade that works for you is tough! I like to test colors on my jawline, chest or neck when choosing a foundation. Chances are you are shopping with make-up on your face so make sure to test on an area that is clean of cosmetics. This will help give you a better idea of what shade works for you.

Concealor: Concealor is used for just that. To conceal blemishes, redness and brighten eyes. I have two concealors; one for blemishes and one to brighten my eyes. When choosing a blemish concealor, make sure that it is almost the same shade as your foundation. If it is lighter, it will highlight your blemishes rather than conceal them. To brighten the eyes, dab underneath the eyes and in the corners of the eyes near the nose to open the eyes. This concealor should be just a shade lighter than your foundation and have a pink undertone to it.

I found this video from Carmindy helpful for application tips. I have not tried her products but her tips are great. Click Here to see Carmindy's Make-Up Application Video

Kim's Fashion Networking Event and Wisconsin Fashion Week

In a sea of statuesque models, a flurry of fashion industry professionals engaging in high volume conversations, and not a microphone to be found in the house; emerges a calm, cool and collected Kristi Moe, coordinator and mastermind behind the Wisconsin Fashion Week movement.

Recognized by In Business Magazine as being part of the “40 under 40” Rising Business Leaders, and featured on the cover of Brava Magazine last year, Kristi is a force to be reckoned with in the Fashion Industry and the swarms of people clamoring around her just to have an opportunity to speak with her for a few brief seconds only reaffirms that the Midwest crowd knows it.  There is something about her presence, her bubbly charm, and her ability to take control of a room that adds an element of “to be taken seriously” to a seemingly simple networking mixer.

What began less than 3 years ago as Madison Fashion Week, has evolved into Wisconsin Fashion Week having tripled in attendance and scale in recent years due largely to extremely well executed events like the Fashion Networking event held on the eve of the nationally recognized Fashion’s Night Out.  Opening the evening’s events with a model casting call, Kristi and her production team welcomed a stunning crowd of WFW runway hopeful’s to The Café in Madison, WI.  Immediately to follow, fashion networking with a room full of industry professionals at the Bonfyre Grill, eagerly anticipating Kristi’s fashionable entrance.

The professional minds and talent levels in the room were amazing, the titles ranging from clothing designers and photographers to make-up artists and hair stylists.  Steffani Lincecum of Stitch Coach Studio http://www.stitchcoach.com/ was in attendance adding pattern maker and published author to the more interesting titles on the list.  Steffani is a great example of a seriously talented fashion mind found right here in Madison, WI.

Rod Swims and the beautiful Brandie Delarosa of Swimwear http://www.swimwearlifestyle.com/index.php?cPath=23 were representing their “Hip Hop Nerd” T-Shirt (and more to come) line, bringing a new level of completely cool elements to the table with entirely unique word play details such as “Straight Outta ‘Sconsin” (for the true Wisconsinite).

Sarah Sandell of Avant Garde http://www.avantgardesalonwi.com/Home.html salon (pictured with Kim) elegantly carried her signature spotlight worthy cropped faux hawk style, demonstrating her brilliant style and talent for custom hair design.  Peter F. Castro http://www.peterfcastro.com/ was strategically positioned behind one of the most brightly shining flash bulbs of the evening and for excellent reason, his ability to capture a moment is untouchable.  Peter has a way of making the ordinary anything but.  A client list as long as my arm, Peter is certainly the top contender on a very short list when it comes to fashionable photography.  Thank you, Peter for these amazing shots!

Kristi’s entrance was not to be missed as she effortlessly took stage, generously revealing a handful of pre-fashion week event details not yet released to the public, in true VIP style.  Wisconsin Fashion Week will take place from November 6 – November 13, 2010 and will be filled to maximum capacity with events and runway shows each representing the overall theme, “Life. Styled.”  The emphasis will be placed on intentional signature pieces over fleeting trends, highlighting eco-friendly and entirely lovable pieces that help us love our world.  The fashion culture in Wisconsin and the surrounding upper mid-west is growing at a jaw dropping rate, and being promoted, welcomed and embraced by this high-profile event open to the general public.

It seems that on my way to VIP access and front row runway seating at New York Fashion Week, I’ve discovered something amazing right here in Wisconsin.  Who knew a seemingly simple networking event would be so incredibly impressive?  I am stricken, and have now completely wiped my calendar of anything less than critical for November 6 – 13, 2010.

FNO Recap: A Fashionista's Moments of Disappointment and Realization of Greatness

This is one of my rawest pieces to date. I debated endlessly how to express the emotions from FNO and if I should write about them at all. I decided to share these feelings that I thought I should mask because this blog is not about hiding, it's about exposing. This is a platform where I can share my thoughts and feelings with the world without question.

In a small way, I feel that I am admitting defeat by sharing with you the utter disappointment one can feel when the expected outcome was not what it should have been. Looking back, it was one of the best nights a girl could have for reasons that were not as obvious as they are today. Here is my story.

Friday, September 10th
Friday night was a flurry of festivities and I could hardly keep up with them all. I worked all day and snuck out just under the whistle to get to my client appreciation event with Christina from 1688. I had invited my friend and co-worker, Carol, to join me for a night of fun.

The salon was buzzing with people and everyone was jovial. Hairdryers were going full speed and Jamie, the Kerastase Rep, was analyzing each client's mane trying to determine what treatment each person needed. With a glass of Pinot Noir in hand, we got underway for a fabulous treatment and blow-out before it hit the city. She always does an amazing job styling hair to make her client's look and  feel like models. She cleaned up Carol's hair cut with just a few snips making her hair really shine. We looked and felt amazing and she even cleverly disguised a blemish of mine that had decided to make an appearance the day of FNO. Thank you, Christina! You are amazing. Check out Carol's do on the right.

The event went until about 7:30. I ducked out at 7 to join my love for an amazing dinner before catching the train. He had a pork tenderloin topped with an amazing chimi-churri paired perfectly with a glass of wine waiting for me when I arrived. It tasted as amazing as it looked. Thank you, baby.

I had plans to meet a great friend, Michele, for a glass of bubbles at 7:45. I finished up my dinner, changed into my new FNO shirt and hopped a train. Needless to say, between dinner, changing and catching the train, I didn't get to SF until 8:30 missing all of the main events for FNO.

It was at that moment that I started to deflate. I realized that the events I was looking so forward to were not going to happen. This is once a year and I couldn't get my act together enough to make it for at least one thing. I was completely disappointed in myself and my actions. In a moment of panic/ desperation, I had called Kimmy from the train almost in tears. Ok, let's be real. There were tears but she said, "Don't cry, you will mess up your make-up and be really mad." She was right. So I sniffled the tears away and continued on out of Oakland but the feeling of defeat remained and was hard to shake.

I got off at Montgomery and met Michele, who had patiently waited for me for an HOUR, at the Rickhouse on Kearney.  As I walked in, you could feel the energy of the crowd and hear the raspy voice of Taj Mahal radiating through the speakers. We sat near the front of the bar for a street view to enjoy a glass and great conversation. I think we laughed for an hour straight; it was perfect. I was starting to feel like things were looking up.

The night came to a close and I caught the 10:30 train home. As I sat there reflecting on the moments of the evening, I realized why I chose to do what I did. It is the relationships in life that fuel my world. It is the people who surround me that mean the most not these events. I chose to spend that time with them. I could have left and missed out on getting my hair done. I could have skipped dinner with the love of my life. And I could have easily rescheduled with Michele. But I didn't. Why? Because these relationships mean everything to me. I have a great circle and was touched by their love and friendship. For that, I am forever grateful.

Sunday Supper: San Marzano Tomato and Mushroom Pasta

This is one of the best impromptu dishes that I have had in a long time. It's meaty, hearty and downright delicious! It can be made in 15 minutes which is also a a plus. The variety of mushroom is up to you. I prefer a heartier mushroom like chantrelles but you can use whatever is available to you. I like to mix it up with Crimini, Chantrelles,  Shitake and even Button.

What you need
Mushrooms of your choice
Fresh or canned San Marzano tomatoes
Yellow onion
Fresh Basil
Parmesan cheese
Pasta of your choice
good Olive oil
Butter (optional)
Salt & Pepper
Red Pepper Flakes (optional)

What to do

Dice your yellow onion and slice your mushrooms. Start boiling your water for your pasta. Depending on which type of pasta you chose, cook according to the suggested time. Heat your saute pan over medium high heat. Add one tablespoon of olive oil and one tablespoon butter. Add your onions and mushrooms to the pan. Sweat out for about 4 minutes, stir and cook an additional 2 minutes. Meanwhile, cut up tomatoes or drain the canned tomatoes well. Add tomatoes to the mushrooms and onions and bring to a boil. Add salt and pepper. Sprinkle in some red pepper flakes (to taste). Continue to cook until sauce reduces and becomes thick. Chop fresh basil and add to the sauce in the last minute of cooking just to infuse the flavor but keep the color green. Sprinkle with salt one more time and don't forget to taste test it. Serve over your pasta and grate fresh Parmesan cheese over the top. Sprinkle with additional fresh basil and serve. Delish!!

I am an Exercise Hater.

I am an exercise hater.  There is something about the mere idea of sweating like a pig for an hour, when I would much rather be retail researching, that makes me curl up into a fetal position on my couch.  Yuck.  The fact that I am willing to admit my fault openly is probably a really positive thing, but that certainly does not seem to stop me from obsessively complaining about the jiggle and squish that covers every inch of me from head to toe.  I’m enough to give me a headache.

Recently, during one of my 1,467 body issue complaint sessions with a great friend, she offered to loan me something that has since replaced Lucky Charms marshmallows on my top 10 list of things I would HAVE to take with me if I were dropped on a deserted island.

Dustin Maher http://www.dustinmaherfitness.com/, a local fitness professional in Madison, WI, has unknowingly reformed my heathen ways.  I “met” Dustin through his Got Core DVD set about 2 ½ weeks ago, and have since lost 1.5” from each thigh, 1.25” from my lower hip (bootie), and .25” from my waist.  My back feels stronger, and my thighs are like bricks.  I am now a Dustin addict.

Dustin Maher is the real deal.  With a degree from UW Madison in Kinesiology Exercise Science, he has put his knowledge to work specializing in helping Moms to achieve great fitness after childbearing.  I have watched several short video clips that Dustin has made available (for free) through his email subscription, and have already learned so much about my body and how to make it work for me.

What I can’t get over, is that I am only working out for 30 minutes, every OTHER day.  That’s it.  10 minutes of “burst” training which Dustin explains on his website (basically, 30 seconds of working really really intensely on the elliptical and then resting for 1 minute…rinse and repeat until 10 minutes have elapsed), 3 minutes of warm up, and 15 – 20 minutes of the Core workout.  Just when I start to whine and complain that this is taking too long and when are we going to be done already…it’s over.  And of an 8 level DVD set, I have just begun the second level this week.  I can barely even begin to fathom what transformations await me as I progress through the series.  Is this really even possible?

Got Core is a 2 disc DVD series, available through Dustin’s website for $29.99 plus shipping.  A far cry from the wasted monthly membership fees I have shelled out over the years to health club after health club.  Dustin also offers a Fit Mom’s for Life series for a subscription and monthly fee, this is completely separate from the Got Core discs.  I cannot personally speak to those as I have not yet tried them, but I can only imagine that they must be great given the effectiveness of Got Core.

Stay tuned for my progress details, and I welcome you to join me in working through the Got Core series and share your own success stories!

Kimberlee's Pick of the Week: Sweater Dress You Up In My Love!

A slight chill playfully breezes in with the morning air, creating the sound of rustling as the first round of fallen leaves blow down the street in the sparkle of the morning sunlight.  September has begun and autumn has settled in to stay for a latte and a pumpkin spice scone. Yummy. Long sleeves and boots, light weight fall jackets and fringe scarves, and best of all to celebrate fall is the universally flattering snuggly sweater dress.  A true chameleon, the sweater dress can take on a completely unique identity based entirely upon its surroundings.  Dressed up with patent leather pumps, or played cool with over the knee wedge boots and a fringy scarf, the options are limitless and the results are each equally gorgeous.

The variety of sweater dress styles and designs to be found on the racks this season are far more abundant than in years gone by, making it substantially easier to find the most flattering choice for your unique silhouette.  Practically every sweater dress is entirely complementary to all body types. The heavier weight of the fabric combined with the simplicity of each cut allow the dress to effortlessly glide over your shape with little to no bunching, scrunching, or tucking into all the WRONG places. Pure genius.

My pick this week, is the Striped Sweater Dress from the Gap.  What do I ADORE about this dress?  The style is extremely unique in the realm of sweater dresses.  The sleeves are short, and the design fits looser down the body than your average curve skimming sweater dress (think boyfriend “esque”).  Because the length of the dress is slightly shorter than others hitting at the mid-thigh, it easily pairs with tights and heels or boots, or topped off with leggings when belted creating a stock room full of amazing looks.  The simplicity of the ultra modern rugby stripe and the heavenly soft cotton/cashmere blend complete the piece with the timeless quality we have come to expect from the Gap.

Love this dress, Love this season.

A Foodies "Diet" Part Three: Healthy, Satisfying Dinner Options

One of the best things that one can do is finish off the day with a delicious dinner that is packed with flavor while remaining healthy. I like mine with a glass of delicious red wine. I have put together a few menu options for you to add to your week. These are omega rich with whole grains and lots of vegetables. I try to have one or two meatless dishes per week. Trust me, you won't miss it. One of the great things about these dishes is that some of them can dual as a lunch option later in the week.

Why do these work?
At the end of the day, you need fuel but don't want to pack in the most calories right before you sit down to watch TV right? These dishes focus on vegetable and legume side dishes and whole grains. These will keep you fuller longer keeping you from snacking before bed.

***Sugar Lip Tip: The fresh fish can sometimes throw a budget off so use your best judgment when shopping; make one fish dish instead of two.
***Tip Two: Plan your dinner time according to your bed time. You don't want to eat at 6pm if you go to bed at Midnight. You will be hungry again before bed.  Example: If my bed time is 11 pm, I try to eat around 7 or 7:30pm.

Should you need specific instructions, please feel free to email me at sugarlipslifestyletips@gmail.com

Foodie Food for Dinner

Grilled Fish Tacos with Spicy Black Beans: Grill or bake halibut (or any other mild white fish). Serve on corn tortillas topped with fresh homemade salsa, cabbage slaw (slivered carrots, red and white cabbage) and chopped cilantro. Cook black beans with red onion and jalapeno.

Pork chops with Cherry Mustard Sauce:
Sear pork chops on the stove top to create crust. Finish them off in the oven. Sauce: 1/2 c. white wine, 1/2 lb. cherries (pitted), 1 tbs. dijon mustard (I prefer the whole mustard seed kind). Reduce and serve over chops with your favorite veggies.

Grilled Wild Atlantic Salmon over Brown Rice with Grilled Zucchini:
self explanatory.

Tomato, Basil, Garlic Sauce over Wheat pasta:
pour 1-2 cups of good quality olive oil into a dutch oven. Turn heat to med-low and allow oil to come to temp. add six chopped garlic cloves. Dice tomatoes (recommended San Marzanos or romas). When oil becomes aromatic, add tomatoes and increase heat to medium high. Bring to a boil, add salt and freshly chopped basil. Stir to combine and serve over whole wheat pasta (recommend Trader Joes, all of the other ones that I have tried are gross).

Homemade Pizza:
Wheat dough topped with tomato sauce (or leftover pasta sauce above). Load it up with vegetables and top with mozzarella cheese. This meatless treat will keep your calorie count lower.

Chicken Pot Pie: What you say?? Yes, this is a favorite of mine. It is easy, delicious and way fewer calories than what you would buy or order out. (Ask Dan R. about this dish. He will agree, it's a great home-cooked meal after a long trip on the road).  I load it with tasty veggies such as onion, leeks, frozen peas, carrots. Saute all veggies until aromatic and remove from heat. I make this with a homemade vegetable stock. Click here for my recipe. I thicken it with a rue (2 T. butter and a little wheat flour). I dice up the chicken and add it to the thickened stock. Add the veggies. Cook over medium heat to infuse flavors for 4 minutes. Pour into individual souffle dishes or baking dishes and top with phyllo dough. Bake for approximately 30 minutes.

Need a Lift? Caffeine Levels in Coffee vs. Espresso

When we lived in on the Big Island of Hawaii, I visited numerous coffee farms to get the low down on what made Kona Coffee so amazing. While I was there, I learned that espresso is not what I thought it was. Before moving to the island, I worked in a restaurant in San Diego where the chefs would come to the bar for espresso shots like it was water. I just assumed that the caffeine kept them going through their 18 hour shifts. Little did I know that espresso has the LEAST amount of caffeine. I guess that's why they needed so much!

Ali and I toured Greenwell Farms with our tour guide, Jonelle. She walked us through the farm explaining the process from picking to roasting. The most interesting part was when we went up to the Hoshidanas (see picture). See where the man is standing? This platform is where the sun drying process of the coffee parchment takes place. According to Jonelle, our guide, the longer the beans are in the sun, the higher the caffeine content. So a dark roast will have the most caffeine and espresso the least because it isn't in the sun as long. Who knew! If you need a lift, drink a cup of dark roast vs. a shot of espresso.

According to USDA National Nutrient Database For Standard Reference, 1 cup (8fl. oz.) of coffee brewed from grounds with tap water, contains 95 mg. of caffeine.  One ounce of espresso contains 64 mg. of caffeine per oz. If you have a double shot then you might be in business. I am on my third cup  o'joe of the morning and I am PRO-DUC-TIVE. Cheers to you and enjoy! Cyn

Even Supermodels Wear T-Shirts: Kimberlee's Pick of the Week

Basics are the essential building blocks to EVERY wardrobe. I don’t care if you are a working single mother of 2 or the infamous Heidi Klum, you must first have your basics in order to build the "wardrobic" empire. Every woman’s foundation needs to include at least a core handful of simple, cotton, ultra comfortable and “easy to incorporate with anything” pieces in their closet…on a Sunday afternoon, even supermodels wear t-shirts.

Just because basics are, well BASIC, does not mean that they can’t look positively fantastic on you when chosen well. Basics should be purchased as high in quality as you can afford so that they last forever, hold their shape, and keep you comfortably fashionable season after season.

My personal favorite basic pieces have always come from the Gap, and the coming fall season’s selections are with no exception. With my Give & Get offer in hand, I managed to purchase some really wonderful basic pieces for 30% off, and Gap thanked me by giving 5% of my total purchases to starving children in my honor. This may be the best deal I have taken advantage of, EVER. If you were not one of the fortunate shoppers to receive this promotion from the Gap this year, I highly suggest that you sign up for their emails so that you can Give & Get with the world next time around.

My top five basics for the fall season include these must have wardrobe building blocks:

The Burnout T (on left)

Heavenly soft and ultra feminine cotton with an edgy rock-star burnout look, an “almost a tunic” length hem, and contrast stitching make this t-shirt the perfect choice to pair with skinny jeans and boots.

The Dolman T
(on right)

Absolutely the most polished t-shirt to be found. The cotton/modal blend creates a dreamy soft feel, combined with a ¾ length dolman sleeve and graceful float in the cut that creates enough visual interest to keep you looking basically beautiful.

The Button-detail Boatneck T (on left)

A long sleeve t-shirt, with a subtle detail at the shoulder lending a totally stylish, semi-military vibe.

The Cowlneck T (on right)

The perfect example of a day to night to weekend t-shirt. The cowl neck drape is ultra flattering, the sleeve has a loose opening to flatter vs. inflate the upper arm, and the fit is absolutely gorgeous. Black pants, great denim, or skinny cargos…this t-shirt will glam them all.

The Cascading Ruffles T(on left)

Every woman needs a white t-shirt in her wardrobe, one that does not come from a neatly packaged “bundle” of 6. This white t-shirt from Gap features a delicately designed bib of cascading ruffles lending a feminine air to this basic piece.

***Sugar Lips Shopping Tip: The color selection in these styles is far more generous in the stores that it appears to be online. I highly suggest that before you make your purchase, you take a field trip to your local Gap to get up close and personal with their military greens, deep plums, midnight blues, and more. Love, love love.

Sunday Supper: Wild Alaskan King Salmon With Fresh Green Beans and Sweet Tomato Corn Salad

Happy Labor Day weekend everyone! Corn and tomatoes are bursting with flavor this time of year and we can't get enough of them. Today's Sunday Supper had a bright mix of vegetables with grilled King Salmon and it is perfect for any gathering. It is paired nicely with a Viognier (75%) Marsanne (25%) blend from Calcareous.

What You will Need
4 oz. of salmon per guest. Make sure to ask for center cuts ensuring that all pieces are accurate. When buying salmon, make sure that it is fresh not frozen. Be sure to ask them when they received it. The texture should be firm and bounce back when you touch it. It should also appear shiny. The eyes of the fish should be clear; if they are cloudy, it's old. Smell it. It should never smelly fishy. Of course it will smell of the ocean but it should never be fishy.
Olive Oil
Tomatoes
Corn
Green Beans
Zucchini
Red Peppers
Red Onions
Salt and Pepper

What to do:
You can grill the fish on a grill or stove top. I chose stove top for better presentation. You will want to prepare the fish last. Bring out your fish and allow to sit on the counter while you prepare the rest of the meal. Rinse the fish and pat dry with a paper towel and let it rest. ***SUGAR TIP: Season your fish right before you cook it to ensure the salt does not pull out the juices.

***Prep your vegetables buy washing and dicing the zucchini, red onion, red pepper, cutting the corn from the cob and dicing your tomatoes. Prepare a pot of boiling water to blanch the green beans. In a saute pan, add olive oil to the pan. Use enough to coat the bottom of the pan. Heat olive oil over medium heat until oil is to temp (about three-four minutes). Add the all diced vegetables to the pan with the exception of the tomatoes. You will add those in the last few minutes. Saute for 10-15 minutes over medium heat stirring often.

Heat a large pan with olive oil over medium high heat. You want it to be nice and hot to create a nice crust on the fish. Salt and pepper your fish fillets on both sides. Add the salmon fillets to the pan and cook to temp or about 3-4 minutes on each side. Do not over cook! Salmon should be bright in the middle and light pink towards the edges.

While your fish is cooking, add the green beans to the boiling water and let them cook for 60 seconds. Removes and toss in a saute pan with butter and sprinkle with salt & pepper. Cook until fish is done. Plate and enjoy!!
