Brand Management: Tips On Making Yourself Marketable

My sister recently graduated and is looking to make her move into a new career. We had a two hour conversation today about how to not only make her marketable but memorable. It's yesterday's news that our graduates are facing a grim job market. With unemployment rates soaring and employers drowning in a sea of resumes and applicants, how does one stand out?

These are some simple, creative and easy ways to enhance your personal brand and give you the edge you need to land the job.

  • Get connected: With all of the social media channels, it is imperative that you become familiar with them and participate in them. Linked In is a great networking resource that can help you find a job, post a job, get a reference and get connected with other professionals. It's an online platform to post your resume, references, and meet new networks.
  • Make positive of the negatives: Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses and find a way to connect them by turning the negatives into positives. How does the weakness support the strength? If you can't find a connection that is logical, determine a strategy for improvement and have it ready if you are given the opportunity to share.
  • Participate in additional or specified training: Is there a certification program that fits your career? Are their certificate classes that you could take for a few weeks or online that would add to your training and resume? Many universities offer certificate programing all year long and you don't have to be enrolled as a student to participate. You can apply as a special student to take a certification course.
  • Find your niche: What is it that you specialize in? Maybe you think that you don't specialize in anything in particular but you probably know more about something than the next guy making you the more qualified candidate. Rework your resume to reflect your niche or specialty.
Good Luck WS!!
