Flirtatious Floral by Jovovich-Hawk: Kimberlee's Pick of the Week

Hot Damn, Target’s Go International Collection has hit the sale racks.  I may not understand the wonders of the universe, but I can certainly appreciate a gift when one lands squarely on my head…or slips over it and drapes me in a girlishly sweet Bohemian rhapsody.

Having stalked this sale for weeks prior to its release, I was thrilled to bits & pieces with my Thakoon score from my local Target store.  I love every inch of heavenly color and lipstick required fabric.  Gorgeous, simply.  Being such a fan of this collective experience brought to my wardrobe, you can imagine how low my jaw must have dropped when I noticed a banner ad on Target’s website announcing the sale of these covetable frocks.  Shut it down.  $10 off here, $20 off there...where do I begin?

My final selection turned out to be my first instinct, a romantically flirtatious floral number with endless 70’s retro style infused with carefree boho attitude.  Designed by Jovovich-Hawk, a creative design team comprised of the lovely Milla Jovovich and Carmen Hawk founded in LA and based upon the premise that clothes should be wearable & comfortable without making a spectacle of the wearer, this piece is stunning.  The stock photos don’t seem to do it the justice it deserves, the Target stylist seems to believe it needs to be belted while I feel it takes a little bit of the creative elegance away from the original design.  I love the ethereal float of its playful nature, the earth tone color palette that comprises the floral playground of its design; everything about this piece is heavenly.  The fit is loose, and flowing so I recommend going with the smaller end of your current size range, it will love your body in an amazing way.

Currently priced at $27.98, I strongly encourage this design be introduced to your wardrobe and paired with every wedge sandal and cognac leather knee high boot you can get your hands on.  Add an unstructured floppy hat and oversized shades and celebrate everything wonderful about the stylish elements of Spring/Summer 2011.

Kate Middleton's Royal Wedding Dress and Tiara

What a beautiful ceremony and an incredible event!  I cried at the sight of her. A rush of emotion came over me to stand witness to the little boy we all watched grow up in the public eye take his Bride-to-be in front of the entire world. She has such poise and grace reminding me of Princess Diana on her wedding day and I am sure that she is beaming with pride from above. As I was watching the broadcast, the announcers called Kate a "commoner" but their is nothing common about her. At 29 years of age, she is the first college educated bride to accept the royal honor. She has demonstrated her inner royalty far before today.

Her Designer, Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, was a brilliant choice as his legacy lives on through her work. Kate's choice to procure her Designer and materials from local resources demonstrates social and economical consciousnesses. Talented individuals from all over the United Kingdom united to display fine British craftsmanship. The dress was made from ivory and white satin gazar with hand-cut English lace and French Chantilly lace. She has chosen to combine modern with traditional design resulting in a classic, clean elegant dress with 58 buttons down the back. The skirt and bodice were hand-made by The Royal School of Needlework.

Her veil was also hand-embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework with a trim of flowers. Her Cartier "halo" tiara, designed in 1936, was lent to her by The Queen which was presented to her on her 18th birthday by her Mother. Kate's earrings were given to her by her parents and designed by Robinson Pelham. His inspiration came from the Middleton Family's new coat of arms.

Support and loved by all,

 They lived happily ever after...

Fashion Friday: The Royal Wedding

What better way to begin Fashion Friday than with royalty? It is only one hour away and counting...I couldn't wait to see this wedding as I was four years old when Princess Di got married.
For anyone who has had the experience of planning a wedding, you all know what it is like to have to create a guest list that won't offend. Can you imagine what this must have been like? They have every member of all foreign families, Dignitaries, Government, Parliament and yet somehow The Beckhams are included. I am glad I am not in charge of the list or head of security. The entire world is watching, hoping and sending their good wishes while Prince William and Catherine Middleton unite.

Three things that I really care about:
Her dress
Her hair
Her make-up

Events This Week! Discarded to Divine and Explode a la Mode Fashion Show

Discarded to Divine
Thursday, April 28th 8pm Live Auction and Show
The Hall at St. Mary's Cathedral, 1111 Gough Street, SF

This is a cause near and dear to my heart. For the 6th year, Discarded to Divine has not only raised funds but raised awareness.
"With help from designers and visionary volunteers, Discarded to Divine has become more than a fundraiser–it is now a movement that embraces charity and sustainability to restore the lives of those around us."

Many of you may recognize Adelle McElveen, a Bay Area Fashion Blogger, that competed in the SFFAMA Live Style Series at THREAD. She plays a key role in Discarded to Divine as a member of the planning committee and continues to volunteer her time throughout the year to help make this event a success.

As one of the most under reported crimes, domestic violence continues to harm families across the country. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence states that nearly one in four women experience some form of domestic violence in their lives. Discarded to Divine was created in 2005 to showcase the talent of local professionals and designers by creating and donating on-of-a-kind couture creations and home decor to be auctioned off at the event. Recycled fashions that renew lives.

Change Your Skin Care Regimen to Banish Dull, Dry Winter Skin

Is your skin looking dull and dry? Are you beginning to break out with the weather changes? Winter weather can take a toll on  your skin. Get ready for a new spring glow with these simple changes to your regimen.

Alternate Moisturizers
Our skin gets drier in the winter so we tend to need a heavier moisturizer. When transitioning into spring, continue to use your heavier moisturizer at night and find a lighter moisturizer for the day. Make sure to seek out a day moisturizer with a minimum of SPF 15 in it. I like to use ALBA Sea Moss Moisturizer.

Use SPF
SUGAR NOTE***Please remember that applying a moisturizer with SPF15 and a make-up powder with SPF 15 does not equal a coverage of 30. It is a SPF 15.

Tinted Moisturizer
I also recommend switching to a tinted moisturizer. My new fave? Hourglass Illusion Tinted Moisturizer. It is oil free and has SPF 15. It has a light to medium coverage and I found that I did not need additional make-up. It was the perfect fit for a winter to spring transition giving you a dewy soft glow eliminating dull matte winter skin.

Drink More Water
It is always helpful to drink more water to improve your skin. You will notice it immediately under your eyes and in your cheeks. How do you think those models look so good?

Easter Sunday Brunch: Jacyn's Breakfast Casserole

I love Easter more than any other holiday. People think I'm crazy but it has two things that I love...specialty truffles and savory brunch. As many of you know, Sunday Suppers was inspired by Sunday Brunch at Grandma Deli's house. Mom always made us a hot plate for breakfast but Grandma made every Sunday special by surprising us with donuts or having a huge spread waiting for us after the service. I call it the"calming chaos" with children laughing and adults reminiscing.

I grew up in the church participating in Sunday School and all that jazz but Easter wasn't just any Sunday, it was an occasion. We usually put on some kind of show where the kids got to sing to the crowd but the really highlight was my outfit. Every year I got a new dress, new ruffle-butt tights or ruffled socks, new shiny white patent leather mary-janes and a hat. Sometimes even little gloves and a handbag. I was in heaven. Literally.

Normally, when I thought of going to Sunday school, I focused on how hungry I was when church got out and I how I couldn't wait for lunch. Easter was the exception as every year the church hosted a pot luck with savory breakfast casseroles that you could smell baking while waiting for the service to end. On a complete jelly bean high and tummy growling, all I wanted was the breakfast pudding waiting for me downstairs.

For the first time ever, I tried to duplicate my childhood love. I have altered the recipe slightly but am more in love with it than ever. This is the once a year dish that will be my tradition from here on out and I can only hope that you and yours enjoy it as much as we did. You can make this the night before and let it rest in the refrigerator or make it the morning of.

Happy Easter- Light and love from SF.
Cyn

What you need
4 eggs
1/2 lb. Italian sausage
1 c. cream (divided into 1/4c. and 3/4c.)
1 1/2 c whole milk
4 oz. cheddar cheese shredded
1 oz. freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 c. chicken stock
1/2 small yellow onion
1 scallion
2 shitake mushrooms diced into really small pieces
1 garlic clove roughly chopped into small pieces
2 sprinkles of garlic powder
salt
freshly cracked black pepper
1 fresh loaf of Acme Sour Batard or any similar hard crusted white bread

What to Do
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large pan, saute your sausage until cooked remove from heat and set aside. In a large bowl, whisk your eggs, 1/4 c. cream, 1 1/2 c. milk, 2 sprinkles of garlic powder together. Cube the bread into 1 inch cubes. Toss bread cubes into the egg mixture and allow to soak for 20 minutes to a half hour stirring occasionally.

Remove sausage from pan and place in a small bowl. Keeping the oils from the sausage, saute your onion over medium high heat for 3 minutes, then add your chopped garlic and stir. Continue to cook until aromatic. Stir occasionally making sure not to burn your garlic. Add your shitakes and continue to cook for another minute. Add 1/2 cup of chicken stock and allow for the mixture to soak up all of the juice which is approximately 1-2 minutes. Add the sausage back into the mushroom mixture so flavors can meld cooking another minute of so.

Meanwhile, add the 4 oz. shredded cheese to the milk and egg mixture. Stir to combine. Gradually stir in the mushroom and sausage mix to the bread mixture. Stir to combine then pour into a well greased 8x8 pan. Evenly pour the remaining 3/4 c. cream over the top of the mixture. Place in the oven and bake for approximately an hour. Serve with slivered scallions and freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Serve mimosas, coffee or freshly squeezed orange juice.

For dessert...check out what the Easter Bunny brought me.

I Win! I Win!! Kimberlee's Pick of the Week: Emilio Pucci Playsuit

I think I could count on one hand the number of things I’ve ever won in my lifetime, and not for a lack of trying.  I tend to throw my name in the hat for most contests or giveaways that boast prizes that appeal to me, but it’s a rare and surprising occasion that my name is drawn as a winner.  Once when I was a little girl of about 8 or 9 years old, I won a collector’s teddy bear complete with a fancy hat and string of pearls from an event I attended with my Mother and I felt like I was the absolute luckiest girl in the entire world.  That experience has now been trumped, and I am not sure that any contest winning will ever come close to that feeling again.

I’m an internet shopper and blogger, so as you can only imagine how often my email is bombarded with sale after sale notice from retailers I may or may not recognize.  Chances are, very little of it is actually unsolicited as I do sign up for email lists, newsletters and fashionable contests on a regular basis, but never the less I still tend to delete most of it if the first 3 words of the subject line do not appeal to me.  Or I should say I USED TO delete most of it.  My behavior has been reformed, following an unexpected experience that brought me indescribable joy with two little words…You Won.

The Outnet.com plays host to a luxury shopping experience at slightly reduced prices from suggested retail, however with names like Emilio Pucci and Alexander McQueen in their repertoire, the reduced price is often still something most of us would have to save for months to afford to work into our shopping budgets.  Window shopping, on the other hand, is free.  I love looking at the amazing designs and daydreaming about what I would buy if I could get my hands on a Black Card, it’s almost as rewarding an experience as I imagine making the purchases must be.

One day while cleaning out my email, I came upon a notice that the Outnet.com was celebrating their birthday with their annual $2 sale and that I could enter for a chance to be one of 2,000 people to shop.  Sure, why not?  I entered my information, not really sure what the $2 sale was exactly, and pretty sure that everyone that keyed in their first and last name was going to get a shot at whatever this deal was going to be.  A few days pass, and I get another email from the Outnet.com, and this time the subject line says “Congratulations! You have won a ticket to the $2 sale.‏” Yeah, ok, sure, I’ll bite…but still not sure what it is that I’ve won a ticket to, and sure that everyone who registered got this same email.

Another day or two pass by, and I get a second email telling me that I need to watch my inbox for a special link to enter this sale and that I may only purchase one item for $2 and once I have made my one purchase, I am not allowed back into the sale.  Now, I am intrigued.  This level of detail sounds like it may just be something to check out.  I head to my favorite social networking outlet, Facebook, to see if there is any buzz about this whole $2 sale business,  and am surprised beyond all belief to read comment after comment on their Facebook wall from people expressing their upset feelings that they did not win a ticket.  Are you kidding me, have I actually won something here?  I’ll believe it when I see it.

The morning of April 15th arrives, and I receive an email telling me that the $2 sale is now open, and I’m ready.

I jump into the showroom and am immediately overwhelmed in a sea of designer names attached to current and trendy beautiful couture pieces that are nothing short of breathtaking.  I start madly trying to add piece after piece to my shopping cart, but each time I click the Checkout button I find that someone else has purchased the piece more quickly than I.  After about an hour of this, I become frustrated with it, and call customer service to ask if I am doing something wrong.  The customer service person politely tells me that he sees nothing in my shopping cart and asks me to take a look at the site and tell him which piece I’d like to purchase and he will process my order for me by phone…quickly.  I request the first thing in my shopping cart, an Emilio Pucci pale green playsuit valued at $1,200.  He tells me my size is available, and begins the checkout process.  With each question he asks, I wait for him to tell me that someone else has just purchased it and I will have to choose something else.  After about 3 or 4 minutes…he tells me my total is $2 and asks what credit card I would like to use to pay.  ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?  I pay, and then wait by my mailbox in a tent for the next 4 days.  Ok, not really, but in my mind I did.  The piece arrives and it is so gorgeous and authentic that I am briefly stunned.  I try it on, looking for the most negative detail I can find, and decide it’s too small for me.  So I pout about it, hang it lovingly in my closet next to Nanette Lepore, and then walk away heartbroken but determined to tone up over the next month or two to make the fit work better for my body.  A few hours pass by, and I decide to try it on one last time just to be sure about my fit concerns,  and when I do I wonder what the hell I was thinking the first time.  Not only does this FIT, it looks exactly like I hoped it would.  I love it.  It’s soft and silky and a little slice of fashionable heaven.  As it turns out, I actually WON something worth winning.
The moral of the story, I suppose, is to always enter contests you hope to win…and don’t delete every email.  It might be a $1,200 Emilio Pucci pale green playsuit.

Favorite Spring and Summer 2011 Accessory Trends

Spring is here and the sun is shining! Time for some SPF and some rays. We spent the weekend in the Central Coast wine tasting near Santa Barbara, home to numerous celebrities including Oprah and California Girl Katy Perry. SB is one of the hottest beach towns on the west coast and we spent our Sunday afternoon cruising State Street on Style Patrol to see what people were wearing. Deck yourself with these classic accessories this season; here are some of my faves.

Moral Coral
Show stopping Coral lipstick is all the rage. I love the coral trend on the lips and the nails. Pick up a tube from Nars for $24 and ask your manicurist to help you choose a shade that compliments your skin tone.

***Sugar Tip: If you have a pinkish, red skin tone, choose a coral with cool purple undertones.

For extra fun, add OPI's Black Shatter from the Katy Perry Collection.
Ray Ban Wayfarer Sunglasses
Protect your eyes from the suns rays while cruising the boardwalk with these classics. The iconic Ray Ban trend continues on. Launched for the first time in 1952, these graced the faces of Hollywood's hottest and clearly are doing so again. I saw these on every age trending among young women and older men. And when I say older men, I mean upwards of 65-80 years of age. I have seen an influx of men rockin' these Original Wayfarer classics ($145) with a slip on pair of Vans or oxfords.   Cool, classic and oh so perfect for a day at the beach.
Birds of a Feather
Is this the 80's in me or is this my love of color? I think it is the latter. I feel that the feather extension trend has passed but the earrings are still in the mix. Add these to any monotone outfit to add a little flare as I did in the photo on the left. These can be found at H&M or if you want a longer more defined feather look, go online to view the collection from Aya Papaya. (Pictured on right below).

Color Blocking, Neon and Pattern Play

L.A. Gear Magenta and Teal have made a comeback. Neon and pattern play are splashed on the cover of every major fashion mag.

Ok, I take it back, this is the 80's in me.

I LOVE what Swatch is up to with their Casual and Color Codes collections. And for the price point, you can get the look for an affordable price. You can pair these with just about anything to stay on  trend without being too flashy.
